“The nervous system is at the center of the way I think about bodywork.”
01Who I help
Most people who come to me are dealing with some combination of physical tension and nervous system dysregulation. Three things come up especially often:
Neck, shoulder, and chest tension. Stiffness and tightness through the neck and shoulders is probably the number one thing I see. You might notice tension through your pecs, your shoulders pulling forward, or that familiar posture that comes from being on our phones or working at a desk.
Jaw and hip tension. I also work with a lot of people who have issues with their jaw and hips. You might be most aware of one area when you come in, while also carrying tension somewhere else in your body.
Nervous system dysregulation. For some people, this looks fast and frantic– your thoughts are jumping from one thing to another, you feel jittery or anxious, or there's a little panic underneath everything. For others, it's the opposite: very slow, disconnected, dissociative, or like you need something to get you back to your passion and drive. Regulation, to me, feels more like flow– being able to move with the natural ebb and flow rather than getting stuck at either extreme.
02What working together might be like
People often tell me they feel loose, open, relaxed, and like we actually got stuff done. I want you to have the relaxation people associate with massage, but also feel like we're making progress– leaving a little more centered, a little more in your body, and a little more regulated than when we started.
03My approach
The nervous system is at the center of the way I think about bodywork. What we're carrying emotionally can show up physically in the body, and when the nervous system is activated and in defense mode, the muscles tense up– meaning we need to get the nervous system to relax before we can actually get the more productive work done. That's why even when I'm doing deep tissue, I want to stay under the pain threshold that becomes too much for you.
04My story
I've always been a very tangible person. I like tactile things. When I was really young, I would give my mom massages, and she would tell me I had “magic hands.” I was also a very anxious and very open child, and my mom (who practiced Reiki herself) gave me tools to work with that sensitivity. We'd use a pendulum, create energy balls together, and she'd teach me how to imagine an energetic boundary that helped me feel safe. That part of me was there very early, even though I lost touch with it for a long time as I grew up.
05BEYOND THE PRACTICE
Dancing and music festivals, coloring and drawing, cooking and baking, flow arts, and spending quality time with the people I love.
